We’re incredibly thankful to Food & Wine for taking the time to tell the story of Union Jack IPA, a beer that’s been woven into the fabric of Firestone Walker since 2008. While moments of recognition are always appreciated, what means the most to us is seeing the history, intention, and people behind the beer reflected back in such a thoughtful way.
“The Brussels Beer Challenge is a top world-class competition that draws some of the very best,” says Firestone Walker brewmaster Matt Brynildson. “It means a lot to win.”
Union Jack was born during a pivotal time for craft beer and for our brewery. We set out to create an IPA that honored classic English roots while embracing the bright, expressive hops that were shaping the American West Coast. From the beginning, balance was the priority. Bitterness with restraint, aroma with structure, and a finish that invited another sip. That philosophy has guided Union Jack through countless batches and evolutions, without losing its soul.
Nearly two decades later, Union Jack continues to represent who we are as brewers: patient, detail-driven, and committed to making beers that endure. We’re proud that it still resonates with drinkers old and new, and grateful to outlets like Food & Wine for helping tell that longer story. At the end of the day, this beer exists because of the people who brew it and the people who drink it, and we don’t take that for granted.
